When it comes to hiring a designer for your home project, one of the most important pieces is your budget. But, figuring out how much you can or want to spend on redesigning your space can be a task within itself. Here are some steps you can take to create a design budget that you can feel good about:
Make a Wish List
Let your imagination run wild. Look at your space(s) and write down everything you would LOVE to do. Take the time to find inspiration photos and figure out what design ideas would make you smile every time you walk into your space. Are you happy wallpaper is back? Do certain colors make you excited? Are there certain pieces you want to incorporate in the design? Creating this list is not only a fun and creative activity, but it allows you to dig deep and show yourself what would be in your dream space.
Look at Your Bank Account
Now that you have created this dream space(s), we want you to take a good hard look at your bank account and monthly expenses. We know, this isn’t as fun as creating a wish list, but it is ESSENTIAL. One thing we don’t want is to create this beautiful, personalized space and then you can’t afford to live there anymore.
Have a heart to heart with yourself about your regular expenses and how much of your savings you are willing to spend on your project. No design option or decor item is worth feeling guilty or having to compromise your lifestyle. At this stage, you just need to come up with a number for the whole scope of work, not exactly how you will spend it.
Keep Extras in Mind
When we think about a newly designed space it is normal to not think about the behind the scenes costs associated with it. Items such as taxes, shipping costs, installation fees, and damage control are part of any redesign. Working with an interior designer could mean these items are built into their cost, but it is still smart to be aware of them.
Choose Your Must Haves
With your wish list and total budget in hand, it is time to figure out what you are willing to do without if your budget doesn’t allow for it. Your must have list is important to have, not just for keeping your budget on track, but to share with your designer so they are in tune with your NEEDS as well as your wants.
Hire Your Designer
Now that you are armed with information your next step should be finding a reputable and excellent designer to help you carry out your vision and stay within your budget. It is important to look at reviews from past clients, past work they have created, and having a conversation with the designer or their team before making a decision.
