Decorating your Sacred Space requires careful planning and restraint. With so many options and design elements that can inspire you, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the things you can incorporate into your design.

But is there a way to determine how much texture, pattern, or color to use?

The 60-30-10 Rule is a breakdown of these elements to guide you incorporating options, such as, color schemes, into your design effectively. This rule of thumb helps designers determine an ideal proportion for a more balanced visual appeal spread across space in your space.

In a nutshell, it states that a primary color should be more prominent and can take up 60% of the existing space, while a secondary color and an accent color will be 30% and 10%, respectively.

With your color palette, you can achieve a better color combination by having the primary color on your wall, large furniture, and bed supported by a secondary color on chairs and curtains. Then it is highlighted by the accent color on artwork, lamps, picture frames, and throw pillows.

Now, how about when it comes to adding decor?

The 60-30-10 rule recommends furniture occupy 60% of the space, then 20% for your rugs, carpets, curtains, and the remaining 10% for your accent pieces.

Here are our tips to be successful at using the 60-30-10 rule:

  1. Choose a secondary color that will work with the primary one. It should work together even with the contrast. Some examples include vanilla (primary) and aqua (secondary), gray (primary), and fudge (secondary).
  2. The same shade of color doesn’t always have to be used. Color schemes within the same family of tones can be your guide. For instance, if you prefer green as your primary color, you can vary the shade using a combination of light green and apple green.
  3. Patterns are a great way to create variation and break the monotony. Just be careful not to overdo it by mixing simple patterns with more intricate ones to avoid a messy look.

The right amount of color combination can bring energy to the room without compromising good taste and style. Follow the 60-30-10 rule, and you can be confident with your design choices in your Sacred Space.
